Solution · Cogeneration · over 1 MW
Cogeneration and gas-fired generation: your own power plant, without investing in it
For large consumers with more than 1 MW of demand. If your process uses steam, hot water or cooling, we put the engines' heat to use and it is cogeneration; waste heat can also produce cooling through absorption. If you do not use heat, it is on-site gas generation for self-consumption, with the same model and the same contract. ENEGRIN finances or builds the plant on your site and operates it; you pay for the energy you receive, below what you pay today. Cummins natural gas engines with a standby engine and an integrated BESS that keeps them close to maximum efficiency, with power quality guaranteed by contract. If your plant has access to natural gas, we take care of the rest.
Why your own plant
When CFE's grid can no longer supply your plant
Availability
If CFE, Mexico's state-owned utility, cannot increase your load, or requires very costly upgrade works to do so, generating on site is the way to grow without waiting.
Continuity and quality
Shutdowns caused by supply failures and poor power quality damage specialized equipment. With your own generation and BESS, the plant receives stable power.
Cost
Energy, plus steam, heat or cooling where applicable, at a cost below what you pay today, under a long-term contract and with no investment in the plant.
What sets our cogeneration apart
A hybrid gas plant with BESS
A gas plant, with or without heat recovery, is most efficient when it runs close to its optimal load point. The problem is that a plant's demand rises and falls throughout the day. We integrate a BESS: it absorbs the peaks and fluctuations, and the engines stay at their optimal point. The result: engines close to maximum efficiency, longer engine life and power quality guaranteed by contract at all times.
The engines chase every peak and valley of demand: constant ramps, more wear and lower efficiency.
International backing
Natural gas and cogeneration plants built around the world by our partners
We are part of an international group of technology partners that has manufactured generator sets since 1992 as a certified Cummins OEM, has a presence in more than 80 countries and has built natural gas plants, several of them cogeneration plants, of 1 to 27 MW in Europe, Asia and South America, with the same hardware we install in Mexico. What ENEGRIN contributes is what sets us apart: the software, the EMS and full integration as an EPC contractor, with 7.5 MW of cogeneration under development in Mexico.
1 / 5Installations by our international group of technology partners.
- Containerized gas generation plant on site.
- Containerized gas generator sets, ready to connect.
- Cummins natural gas engine in an engine room.
- Generator set factory: certified Cummins OEM since 1992.
- BESS integrated into the plant: it absorbs peaks and fluctuations so the engines run at their optimal point.
How the contract works
What a director asks before signing an energy contract
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What do I pay? | The energy you receive (and the steam, heat or cooling, if applicable), at a discounted price relative to your current cost with CFE. You do not pay for the plant. |
| Who invests? | ENEGRIN finances the plant, or builds it for you if you prefer to own it. It is built on your site. |
| What about gas? | Your plant needs access to natural gas. If you have access but no contract, we manage the supply. If you already have a contract, we work with your gas. |
| Isolated from CFE or connected? | We prefer isolated self-consumption: a private electrical network for your plant, with power quality guaranteed by contract. Fluctuations on CFE's grid damage specialized equipment; on a private network, we control voltage and frequency. We also develop grid-connected self-consumption projects when that makes sense. |
| What if I need grid backup? | CFE or a qualified supplier remains as backup if you require it. |
| What happens if an engine fails? | The plant is designed with a standby engine, and availability is guaranteed by contract. |
| What power quality do I receive? | Power with quality guaranteed by contract: stable voltage and frequency, free of harmonics that damage your equipment, measured continuously with a certified instrument. Parameters for your engineerVoltage: maximum sustained deviation ±5 %. Frequency: 60 Hz ±0.2 Hz in steady state. Maximum unbalance 2 %. Harmonics within IEEE 519 (maximum voltage THD 5 %). Sustained power factor of 0.95 on the plant's private network (isolated self-consumption); for a grid-connected plant, the Grid Code requirements at the point of interconnection also apply. Measurement with a Class A instrument (IEC 61000-4-30) with continuous recording. |
| Which permits are needed, and who handles them? | ENEGRIN handles all of them: the generation permit from the CNE, Mexico's National Energy Commission (under the cogeneration category if heat is put to use), the environmental impact authorization and, if the plant is interconnected, the interconnection studies and contract. The details are in the FAQ. |
| What if my plant grows? | The plant is sized to your current consumption and your growth plan; the BESS absorbs the peaks. Growth no longer depends on CFE authorizing more load. |
| Who operates and maintains it? | ENEGRIN, for the full term of the contract, with continuous remote monitoring and the same transparency platform as the BESS. |
| Term and price? | Contracts run 15 to 20 years. Price depends on the specific conditions of your plant and its location, and is set in the proposal. |

Frequently asked questions
At what plant size does cogeneration make sense?
Above 1 MW of demand, with natural gas available. If you use steam, heat or cooling in your process, it is cogeneration and the return improves; if not, the same plant operates as on-site gas generation for self-consumption.
Which permits are needed?
The generation permit from Mexico's National Energy Commission (CNE) for self-consumption, isolated or interconnected; if the plant puts its heat to use, the permit falls under the cogeneration category and the capacity is authorized based on the thermal demand of your processes; the environmental impact authorization from SEMARNAT, Mexico's environment ministry (an environmental impact statement, or a preventive report if your plant is in an authorized industrial park); the social impact assessment submitted to SENER, Mexico's Ministry of Energy, where applicable; and, if the plant is interconnected, the interconnection studies and contract with CENACE, Mexico's grid operator, and CFE. For self-consumption plants of 0.7 to 20 MW, the Self-Consumption One-Stop Shop (Ventanilla Única de Autoconsumo) coordinates the filings and the CNE rules on the permit within a maximum of 30 business days. ENEGRIN handles them.
